In the world of MMA inspired apparel, there are quite a few different styles featuring influential figures, which involves paying tribute to an important person throughout the history and culture of martial arts. This spring 2012 season, a few stand out among the rest, and we’ve compiled a list of the top 10 tees from this year, in no particular order.
We start off with the Roots of Fight Bruce Lee Photo shirt, which pays homage to one of the fathers of modern mixed martial arts, Bruce Lee. Depicting his relaxed, fun side off-camera, the shirt carries a lighthearted vibe. Next is a shirt that honors the ambassadors of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, the Gracie family. This aptly colored Brazil-green shirt reveals a simple design, inspired by original Academia Gracie passport art. A legend in the sweet science world is also honored, with a Muhammad Ali inspired shirt from Roots of Fight, presented as a 70’s inspired cornerman tee. Also represented by Roots of Fight is modern Jiu-Jitsu ace Eddie Bravo, and the legendary grappling match between Helio Gracie and Masahiko Kimura.
VXRSI’s Hero Series features a few heroes of the sport in their designs as well, which feature vibrant color combinations and classic text to stand out with simplicity. Included in the Hero Series are legends Randy Couture, Rickson Gracie, and Kazushi Sakuraba; each of their respective tees is featured in their country’s colors, which is a nice touch. Also from VXRSI is an interesting design called “Bruhammad,” which features an image of Muhammad Ali standing in a fighting pose, with the body of Bruce Lee, forming a visual hybrid.
Last, but not least, is the UFC Global shirt, which features a banner inspired by Genki Sudo’s philosophy that “We Are All One.” This collection of hero-inspired tees represents the foundations of the great sport of MMA, honoring those that have helped launch the sport into what it has become today.
